"The world's first premium double cab bakkie" is what Mercedes-Benz was labelling their latest model, the X-Class, at the world premiere hosted in Cape Town.
As pointed out in our teaser post, the X-Class will be built in the same factory as the all-new Nissan Navara, and at a foundation level, the two cars seem to have some similarities:
- They both are built on a ladder frame
- They both have front independent suspension
- They both have rear, coil spring suspension, solid axles
You can choose your own premium double cab in one of four engine derivatives:
X 200 - 122kW/238Nm
X 220 d - 120kW/403Nm
X 250 d - 140kW/450Nm
X 350 d - 190kW/550Nm (the only 6 cylinder engine in the line up)
Trim levels include:
- X-Class Pure (basic variant)
- X-Class Progressive (extra styling and comfort functions)
- X-Class Power (the boss - and no doubt best in segment)
The X-Class is due to go on sale locally in SA in early 2018 and prices are expected to start at the R600k mark. See some of the official launch pics below:

WHAT IS ‘THE TORQUE’?
The Torque is an independent platform dedicated to car reviews. Instead of judging a car based on one or two people’s opinions, the Torque allows you to see what like-minded, real people, who actually own or regularly drive the cars have to say about them.
In addition, the Torque team shares their own ‘lifestyle orientated’ and easy-to-understand reviews on selected cars. Combining the two, gives one the ability to make a truly informed purchasing decision on what the best car for you is. After all, buying a car is a big decision!
